And while most of the PFOA burns off during the curing process, trace amounts remain in the final product.


But what happens when this useful tool turns potentially toxic? The primary health concerns linked to nonstick coatings stem from the PFOA used in manufacturing and the possibility of releasing toxic fumes when the non-stick coating is overheated. Numerous scientific studies have associated PFOA exposure with harmful health effects such as cancer, liver damage, reproductive issues, and developmental disorders.


The environmental consequences of PFOA are equally concerning. During manufacturing, use, and disposal of non-stick cookware, PFOA can leach into air, water, and soil. This chemical is persistent, remaining for extended periods in the environment, traveling vast distances via air and water currents, and gradually entering the food chain. Worryingly, PFOA has been detected in human blood samples worldwide, indicating a pervasive and long-lasting pollutant.


Moreover, when these pans are overheated—beyond 500°F (260°C)—they can emit fumes containing PFOA vapors, PTFE particles, and other toxic compounds. These fumes can cause polymer fume fever, a temporary flu-like condition, with symptoms like headaches, fever, chills, coughing, chest tightness, nausea, and vomiting. While generally not severe, polymer fume fever can be dangerous for individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, and it can be fatal for birds.


The long-term health effects of PFOA exposure remain unknown. In response to these potential health threats, the US Environmental Protection Agency has established a health advisory level for PFOA in drinking water, while the US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of PFOA and other long-chain PFCs in food packaging materials.

As a global environmental organization, Greenpeace has reported several instances of animals found ill or dead from ingesting PFOA or PTFE from landfill sites.
